| 5304 | -----Original Message----- From: JERRY & LILLY HEFLIN [mailto:jheflin@cox.net] Sent: Monday, 09 December, 2002 11:20 AM To: hooperhous@earthlink.net Subject: WILLIAM HENRY WELCH I am descended from Eliza Welch, born 15 December 1885. I don't have the children for them that you have listed. I have the 1880 census showing W. H. and M. E. Welch in Wise County, TX. There is one child listed--W. Welch. My agrandmother never mentioned W. as a brother. This is the only Welch family that I could find in 1880 that sounds like our William Henry and Mary. Our word-of-mouth information from my grandmother, Liza, was that she had two sisters, Rachel and Melissa, and two brothers, Jack and Jake. I do have a picture of William Henry Welch and Mary Ellen Welch and their family. The family picture shows William and Mary seated, three girls, two boys, and a baby (not sure if boy or girl). I also have a posed picture of Jack and Jake together when they were about 8 and 12 or thereabouts--hard to tell age. Then I have individual pictures of Jack and Jake when they were young adults. The family picture correlates with the information I have on the family, except for the baby. We had always been told that William Henry Welch had been killed in a disagreement with a neighbor over a piece of land when Melissa was a baby. In the picture, it looks like Melissa is about 4 or 5 years old. If Melissa was 5 years old in this picture and there was another baby, then William Henry Welch didn't die in 1894. It would have been later. I haven't been able to visit Freestone County, Texas, to check the newspaper archives to see if I can locate anything on William Henry Welch's death. I am not sure where Mary Welch and children were in 1900 and 1910. Liza married in 1904 in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. In the 1920 census in Bryan County, OK, I have Linford Bray and Rachel Bray and children. Listed next to them on the census is Jack Welch--age 30. In his household are Mary Welch, mother, age 67, and brother Jay, age 26, and Jay's wife May--age 15. That would make Jack born in 1890 and Jay born in 1894. I am guessing that Jay would be the brother called Jake by my grandmother Liza. Also in that census is William Marsh, wife Minnie, and several children. Next to him on the census is Lester Marsh plus wife and 1 child. I haven't determined what relation they are to Mary Marsh Welch. How are you related to this family? I would be happy to share information with you. Possibly, you may have documentation info that I don't have. I had been in contact with another person researching the Welch family, but have lost her E-Mail address. Lilly Heflin From: William Green [mailto:wlgreen@swbell.net] Sent: Monday, 14 April, 2003 2:13 PM To: Peggy Hooper Subject: Re: Your Family Web page Give me a bit of time to make a list. Right now, all of the data is locked up in a PAF file. Dona was born in 1901, so today I'm tracking Rachel (R.L.) and Talford Lott (T.L.) in Parker Co., TX where Dona was born. Dona will be in Mead, Bryan Co.,OK and (Old) Woodville, Marshall Co., OK in her adult life. There you will find the William Henry bunch also. It seems as if after he was killed they all scattered. I'm attaching my current gedcom file that you can open and get the dates, else I'll have to scan my chart and send more pictures....unless my OCR is working. William | Welch William Henry

| 5309 | William was my father. He was born in the Bryson City area, Swain County, NC and recorded in the April 16, 1910 census in Bryson City living with his sister, Sarah Catherine Welch Wilson and her family. He was listed as a brother-in-law in the Wilson household, 26 years old and doing odd jobs. He is found in the 1920 Census living in Cherokee County, Murphy/Hanging Dog Precinct with a family of four children. After marrying and with a family of six, he moved from Hanging Dog, NC, the home of his wife, Blanche, to Springfield, OH in mid 1923, where the seventh child was born. He lived there until his retirement from the Buffalo-Springfield Road Roller Company in 1950. After retirement, my father and mother moved to Hayesville, NC for a short time before moving back to Ohio. Finally, they moved to Redlands, CA and then to Inglewood, CA. He died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 75 while sitting in a laundry-mat in Inglewood, CA. Paramedics, called "Rescue 7" quickly arrived, but he never regained consciousness. Dad was called "Will," by my mother and most people who knew him. He was the sixth born of eleven children to Jackson Marion "Dack" and Mary Susan Jenkins Welch. My father once told me that he was born on a farm in Swain County, NC, where he lived until he was an adult. He served a short time in the U.S. Navy, taught school in Athens, TN, mined copper while living in Copper Hill, TN, (until a mine accident ended his mining career), and farmed in Hanging Dog until 1923 when he moved to Springfield, Ohio. Not all of this can be substantiated, however. On his Social Security Application form filled out on December 2, 1936, he listed his parents as Jackson Marion Welch and Mary "Sousan" Jenkins. His mother's name may have been spelled, "Susannah" or "Susan," but she was called "Sou Anner." Apparently, she could not write, and so there is no record of her full name. Source: William R. | 5314 | BIOGRAPHY: Sometime after 1890 moved his family to Texas. Aug 2002 William Welch, son of Joseph Washington Welch, was my great grandfather. After his wife and several children died of typhoid fever in 1898, in NC, he became very despondent. In 1900 he moved to Georgia with his four daughters, where he eventually married the widow of his cousin. After 18 mos. in Georgia, they all moved to Grand Prairie, TX. I have not been able to find out the name of the second wife. If you have information that might help, please contact me at emaxson2@attbi.com Liz Maxson (GenCircles post) __________________ According to family lore, William married the widow of one of his Proctor cousins while he was in GA. Apparently, they moved with his 4 girls and her children to Grand Prairie, TX. It is not known how long this marriage lasted. William divorced his second wife some time after they arrived in Grand Prairie, Dallas Co., TX (after 1901) He moved to Haskell, Haskell Co., TX where he lived alternately with Nora and Olive. At some point in time, he went into partnership with another man in a service station. The station had a small house on the property, where William stayed. Eventually, he moved back in with Nora. At a later time, he also lived with Olive Elizabeth, but was with Nora, when he passed away. (notes from Evelyn Beryl Cathey) Louise Elizabeth and William were distant cousins. Her randmother, Elizabeth Welch Bradshaw, was the cousin of William's ggggrandfather, Thomas Welch. Her grandmother, Elizabeth Welch Bradshaw, was the cousin of William's ggggrandfather, Thomas Welch. I never met my great-grandfather, William Welch, but I have felt I've known him all my life. Father (as he was lovingly called by my mother and grandmother) died about 2 years before I was born, but from an early age, I was told that I was much like him. Apparently, he would get into a car, spread out, make his "nest", and then, if there was any room left, others could get in. I was told repeatedly, that I had that characteristic, too. Also, when he was upset or frustrated, he would let out a long sigh, which I have done all my life. People who know me well, know exactly when I am not happy about something, and apparently Father expressed his frustrations the same way. I think it is odd that those kinds of characteristics might me hereditary, but since I was the only one in our immediate family who had them, it seemed they just might be a part of an inherited trait. (Elizabeth Cathey Maxson, Jan 20, 2008) __________________ This is a description of Hazel Creek, written by William Welch: HAZEL CREEK Blind Homer sang of Trojan wars and heroes, Horace of Love, Dante of Infernal regions, Melton of Paradise. Now if I had the genius of all those old Masters combined, a harp with a thousand strings and all the earth for an audience, I would sing with all my heart and soul about Old Hazel Creek. I would proclaim all her beauties and rugged grandeurs to the remotest generations. If I were a sculptor and had the power to chisel my thoughts on marble, I would search all the quarries of the earth for the purest white stone and somewhere in an enchanted land, where the skies are the bluest, the water the purest, the birds sing the sweetest far into the soft mellow moonlight night, I would begin a work of love and duty. I would bid the cold marble to speak for me as I plied the chisel to its side until the surface took the shape I wished and at last Old Hazel Creek stood revealed in all her beauty, ready to give of her pure cold water of her many springs to bless the drinker with joy and health. I would make a base on which the spirit of my dreams would stand, and around its rim I would carve the figures of many dear faces, with their hands raised to beckon all humanity to come see. For of all the streams, she is the purest. __________________ | Welch William M.
