• Notes

  Delilah Broyles Hooper, wife of Isaac, was experiencing a very hard life during the years of the Civil War. Her husband was very ill and dies in Sep 1864. During the same month her 6-year-old son John dies, cause unknown. Delilah is also pregnant with her 7th child who is born 26 Feb 1865. The war is raging, the soldiers have commandeered everything, cows, chickens, household stores, there is nothing left, Delilah's husband has died, her son has died, she is pregnant, no food, no nothing. So Delilah and all the kids follow along with the troops in order to have some measure of safety and food to eat. She never remarried even though she was only about 34 or 35 when she was widowed. RE: Delilah's photo, May 2005 from Clair Hadley: Delilah Jane Broyles lived with Ben and Rosy during most of her widowhood (after the civil war) and Don's mother knew her very well. The photo I sent you of Delilah was cropped from a group shot of the country schol and all Ben's children are in the photo. She looks Indian in that photo and ALL the family says she was. I would think Don's mother would have known whether the grandma who lived with them was an Indian--wouldn't you? The censuses give no clue, but, then, that was an era when you didn't advertize that you were native american! so--we have a puzzle! Clair
